Sweden rejects residency for Egyptians handed over to CIA
Nov 19, 2009, 14:40 GMT
Stockholm - Two Egyptian nationals who were handed over to the CIA in 2001 and deported to Egypt in a much-criticized decision were Thursday denied permission to settle in Sweden.
The Swedish government rejected appeals from Mohammed al-Zari and Ahmed Agiza for residence permits after a 'comprehensive review,' Migration and Asylum Policy Minister Tobias Billstrom said.
The two were in December 2001 handed over to CIA agents and flown to Egypt where they were suspected of terrorist activities.
The former Swedish government relied on assurances from Cairo that the two men would not be ill-treated, but the pair claimed they were, according to the New York-based group Human Rights Watch.
Both men received damages in 2008. The centre-right government in 2007 instructed the Swedish Migration Board and the Migration Court of Appeal to review their cases.
