Catherine Ashton chosen as EU foreign policy chief (Urgent)
Nov 19, 2009, 18:24 GMT
Brussels - European Union leaders agreed to appoint Catherine Ashton, the bloc's trade commissioner, as its first-ever foreign policy director on Thursday, officials in Brussels said.
The post was created by the Lisbon Treaty, which comes into force on December 1. The 'high representative,' as she is officially known, is meant to help give the EU a higher profile abroad and to make its foreign policy more coherent.
