German police recapture second man of jail-break pair
Dec 1, 2009, 9:12 GMT
Cologne, Germany - Police caught on Tuesday the second of two jail escapers whose carjacking spree had unsettled the west of Germany.
Peter Paul Michalski, 46, who was serving life for murder, was nabbed in the small town of Schermbeck, about 30 kilometres from the Dutch border. The other escaper, Michael Heckhoff, 50, who was serving life for kidnapping, had been caught on Sunday.
After escaping from a high-security prison on Thursday evening, the duo had kept on the move by seizing cars at gunpoint and ordering drivers to take them to the next town or provide home accommodation.
Police said armed police had chosen a safe place to pounce and neither Michalski nor officers had been hurt during the capture.
Police opened a separate inquiry into how a German newspaper, Bild, had obtained and published direct quotes from Heckhoff.
