Russia boosts rail security in wake of terrorist attack
Dec 1, 2009, 14:38 GMT
Moscow - Fears of more terrorist attacks in the wake of the bombing of a high-speed express train have prompted Russian authorities to boost rail security, the Interfax news agency reported Tuesday.
Deputy Interior Minister Mikhail Sukhodolski announced the measures, according to the report.
Security was tightened on the Moscow to St Petersburg stretch of the rail line where the attack on the Nevsky Express occurred Friday, as well as at important train stations and stretches of track.
At least 26 people were killed and 100 were injured in bombing that caused the train carrying 650 people to derail.
Investigators are focusing on four suspects in particular, according to Russian media.
Former soldier Pavel Kossolapov, who now apparently sympathizes with Islamist terrorist movements, is suspected of having masterminded the attack. Some Moscow newspapers on Tuesday proclaimed him Russia's worst terrorist.
Kremlin supporters have announced plans for a 15,000-person strong demonstration against terrorism on Wednesday.
