President of bottom Spanish club Xerez resigns
Dec 3, 2009, 12:56 GMT
Madrid - Carlos de Osma surprisngly resigned as president of Spanish first division club Xerez on Thursday, claiming that he and his family had received threats.
De Osma refused to give details about the threat at an emotional press conference on Thursday.
'I am going home to enjoy my family,' he said, somehwat enigmatically.
'I have been receiving threats,' he added, 'my children and my wife also...This is a decision which has been coming for a long time.'
De Osma guided the modest Andalusian club to their first ever promotion to La Liga last June.
'Since we won promotion,' he said 'there has been a negative ambience. This is not normal...It is a pity that, from the third game onwards, some people have been saying that we are bound to return to the second division.'
He finished the press conference by saying that he was confident Xerez could avoid relegation.
De Osma did not explain who his successor will be.
Xerez - who lost 2-0 at home to leaders Barcelona on Wednesday - are bottom of La Liga with just seven points from 13 games. They have only managed to score four goals so far and are the bookmakers' favourites for relegation.
