Obama says nuclear deal with Russia close (Extra)
Dec 18, 2009, 17:48 GMT
Washington/Copenhagen - US President Barack Obama said Friday the United States and Russia have made 'excellent progress' and that a deal on a new nuclear reduction treaty was 'close.'
'We've been making excellent progress. We are quite close to an agreement, and I'm confident it will be completed in a timely fashion,' Obama told reporters in Copenhagen after meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
Obama and Medvedev met on the sidelines of the climate change talks and focused their discussion on a new nuclear treaty to replace the 1991 START, or Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, which expired on December 5.
'Our positions are very close,' Medvedev said, adding there were only some 'technical details' to work out.
