Runaway train crashes into hotel; no injuries
Jan 4, 2010, 13:22 GMT
Helsinki - Several million euros of damage were reported, but no people harmed, when a runaway Finnish train smashed into a hotel Monday at Helsinki central station, local media reported.
Four cars on an intercity train broke loose and rolled down a slope from the depot to the railway station, where they rammed into the hotel building, which includes a wing that houses offices next to the station.
The train was not carrying any passengers, but had three staff members onboard. They alerted other staff at the station, who helped clear the platform to which the runaway cars had been diverted.
The speed at impact was estimated at some 20-30 kilometres per hour, causing the cars to jump buffers at the end of the train line, the online edition of Helsingin Sanomat newspaper reported.
The accident also caused delays for commuter and intercity trains, news agency STT reported.
