Heavy snow hampers traffic, blocks roads in Spain
Jan 8, 2010, 11:16 GMT
Madrid - Heavy snowfall hampered traffic in northern Spain on Friday, causing chaos in cities such as Santiago de Compostela, traffic officials said.
The border pass into France was reopened at La Jonquera, but around 100 road links remained affected, with more than 10 of them closed around the country. Some schools suspended classes in the north.
Airports were functioning normally except for three domestic flights which were unable to land in La Coruna, and landed at other airports.
On the holiday island of Majorca, rainstorms uprooted trees and knocked over advertising billboards. The port of Palma de Majorca was reopened after a temporary closure.
Near Burgos in the north, the driver of a snowplough discovered the dead body of a motorist lying on a highway.
If he turns out to have died of the cold spell, that would bring the death toll associated to weather problems to two since Thursday, when a woman died in flooding in the south.
Unseasonally-heavy snow has blanketed much of northern Europe, bringing Britain to a virtual standstill, as well as affecting France and Germany.
