New ownership for Siena as relegation looms
Jan 15, 2010, 10:02 GMT
Rome - The new president of Siena, Massimo Mezzaroma, took the helm of the Tuscany side Thursday with the daunting task of rescuing them from a looming relegation, Italian media reported.
As the Serie A league this weekend begins its second half, Siena lie last on 12 points from 19 games.
They suffered a third straight defeat last weekend, despite being quite convincing as Inter Milan edged them 4-3 with two last-gasp goals.
Mezzaroma, who is also president of Serie A2 volleyball team M. Roma Volley, acquired Siena from investments entrepreneur Giovanni Lombardi Stronati.
He is the son of real estate magnate Pietro Mezzaroma, who in the 1993 briefly co-owned Serie A side Roma with the late Franco Sensi.
Siena began the season with Marco Giampaolo as coach, replacing him with Marco Baroni after 10 games and three games later with Alberto Malesani. They have played in the Serie A since 2003.
