Filipe Luis breaks leg while scoring for Deportivo
Jan 23, 2010, 23:38 GMT
Madrid - Filipe Luis, the Brazilian left-back of Spanish side Deportivo Coruna, broke his right leg Tuesday and will almost certainly miss the rest of the season.
He suffered the fracture while scoring the first goal for Deportivo in Saturday's late match at home to Athletico Bilbao.
The injury occurred five minutes into the second half. Rodolfo Bodipo headed a centre across goal, and Filipe Luis made it 1-0 with an acrobatic left-foot shot - only to badly break his right leg when he fell.
He was immediately stretchered off in tears. Deportivo coach Miguel Angel Lotina wept, too.
The injury means that Filipe Luis, 24, will almost certainly miss the World Cup finals for Brazil, after starting 2010 in excellent form.
He joined Deportivo in 2006 from Uruguayan club Rentistas. Last summer, world champions Barcelona tried to back him but were put off by Deportivo's high asking price.
