Backcountry skier dies in Czech avalanche
Jan 31, 2010, 16:38 GMT
Prague - A 36-year-old backcountry skier died in an avalanche in the north-eastern Czech Republic, an official said Sunday.
Michal Klimes, the head of the mountain rescuers in the Jeseniky mountains, said that the victim ignored warnings to stay away from the avalanche-prone area, likely causing the snow to break loose.
A small avalanche on Saturday killed a 13-year-old boy in region, according to Miroslav Guttner, the head of mountain rescue operations in the Krusne Hory mountains.
The teenager and his 15-year-old friend were sliding down a steep hill when the snow buried them. Although the second boy made it out and rushed for help, rescuers were not able to resuscitate his friend.
Mountain rescuers warn that small avalanches currently pose danger on hills steeper than 35 degrees across the Czech Republic.
