Poland issues EU arrest warrant for Auschwitz sign theft
Feb 2, 2010, 15:52 GMT
Warsaw - Poland has issued a European arrest warrant for a Swede suspected of organizing the theft of the 'Arbeit Macht Frei' sign from the Nazi death camp Auschwitz, a district court spokesman in Krakow said Tuesday.
The warrant was issued for Anders Hogstrom after Swedish officials provided more information on the suspect. Hogstrom, a former leader of Sweden's Nazi party, claimed last month he helped police find the stolen sign.
The sign, which means 'Work sets you free,' was stolen on December 18 and recovered two days later.
Five men have been arrested in Poland on suspicion of organizing and carrying out the theft of the sign.
The sign hung over the entrance of the camp where Nazis killed some 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, during World War II in occupied Poland.
