Moscow - At least six Russian security officers have been killed in battles with Islamist rebels in the North Caucasus, security forces told Russian newswire Interfax Friday.
One high-ranking anti-terror official was killed by a car bomb in the republic of Dagestan Friday, they said.
In neighbouring Chechnya, five soldiers died after a firefight near the village of Alkhasurovo. Another six were injured.
Islamist rebels in the area have been fighting for an independent Caucasian emirate for years.
