Olympic medalist Fernandez admits to doping attempt
Feb 11, 2010, 11:28 GMT
Madrid - Spanish walker Francisco Fernandez has admitted to attempting to dope in order to improve his performances in the 2010 season, local media reported Thursday.
The Olympic silver-medallist from Athens 2004 and two-time European champion (2002 and 2006) reportedly told police that he obtained doping substances as he wanted to return to the top.
The 32-year-old said that he did not take the substances as a doping ring around the Peruvian sports doctor Walter Viru was uncovered in November last year by Spanish police.
The South American doctor is a former colleague of Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes, who is said to have headed a wide-ranging doping ring.
El Pais reported that Fernandez is said to be willing to work with officials in the hope of receiving only a year-long ban, which would allow him to compete again at the beginning of next year.
