Olympic medalist Fernandez to accept any punishment
Feb 13, 2010, 13:08 GMT
Madrid - Spanish walker Francisco Fernandez said late Friday that he would accept any punishment after earlier admitting that he attempted to dope in order to improve his performances in the 2010 season.
'I will accept my punishment. I am aware that I made a mistake,' he said.
The Olympic silver-medalist from Athens 2004 and two-time European champion (2002 and 2006) earlier told police that he obtained doping substances as he wanted to return to the top.
The 32-year-old said that he did not take the substances as a doping ring around the Peruvian sports doctor Walter Viru was uncovered in November last year by Spanish police.
The South American doctor is a former colleague of Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes, who is said to have headed a wide-ranging doping ring.
