"Sabotage" oil spill threatens Italy's River Po
Feb 24, 2010, 9:28 GMT
Milan, Italy - Suspected saboteurs on Wednesday spilled some 600,000 litres of oil and diesel into a river east of Milan, forcing authorities to place emergency barriers to prevent the slick from reaching the country's main river, the Po.
The contents of several containers at a depot near the northern city of Monza were poured into the River Lambro, a tributary of the Po, a river flowing from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea and which provides irrigation to some of Italy's most important agricultural areas.
Police were investigating the incident.
