Mallorca put pressure on Sevilla by winning in Valladolid
Feb 28, 2010, 18:00 GMT
Madrid - A late 2-1 win away to Valladolid on Sunday leaves surprise package Valladolid fifth in the Spanish Liga - and puts pressure on fourth-placed Sevilla.
Mallorca are now just two points behind Sevilla, who are at home to Athletic Bilbao later on Sunday.
Mallorca lost 3-1 at home to Sevilla last Saturday but were determined not to come away from Valladolid empty-hamded.
'After the Sevilla defeat,' said midfielder Borja Valero, 'we vowed that we could not let any more points slip away from us.'
'Winning here today,' he added, 'was very important, because our away form has not been good.'
Alberto Bueno gave lowly Valladolid the lead five minutes into the second hald. However, defender Ruben levelled for Mallorca then Julio Alvarez gave the islanders a late winner.
Mallorca are now two points above sixth-placed Deportivo Coruna, who lost 1-0 in Villarreal on a goal from Joseba Llorente.
Villarreal crashed out of the UEFA League on Thursday in Wolfsburg, but are determined to return to Europe next season. Sunday's win takes them up to eighth.
In Sunday's other early games, Sporting Gijon came from behind to beat Osasuna 3-2, Almeria won 2-0 in Santander and Espanyol were held to a 1-1 draw by bottom team Xerez.
Doomed Xerez have just 12 points, followed by Tenerife and Valladolid on 20. Then come Zaragoza on 24 and Santander on 25.
