Sarkozy ready to "welcome" beaten Moroccan woman who was expelled
Mar 8, 2010, 14:00 GMT
Paris - French President Nicolas Sarkozy is prepared to welcome back to France a young Moroccan woman who was kicked out of the country after complaining to police that her brother had beaten her, his office said in a statement.
The woman, Najlae Lhimer, was jailed and expelled from the country in January immediately after filing a complaint against her brother with police in the city of Chateau-Renard. A secondary school student, she had originally come to France to avoid an arranged marriage in Morocco.
However, she had been under a warrant to leave France since November 2009.
According to Sarkozy's office, Lhimer would be welcomed back in France if 'she wished' to return.
Sarkozy made his statement during a meeting at the Elysee Palace, on International Woman's Day, with 22 women representing woman's rights associations.
