Northern Kosovo hit by minor earthquake, no causalities
Mar 10, 2010, 14:59 GMT
Belgrade - An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale struck northern Kosovo Wednesday, Belgrade media reported.
There were no reports of causalities or damages.
'The epicentre was in the Zubin Potok region, some 15 kilometres north-west from Kosovska Mitrovica,' said Branko Dragicevic, a deputy director of Serbia's Seismology Institute.
Dragicevic added that an earthquake of that size could possibly cause damage to poorly built buildings. Experts say that Serbia is not very prone to earthquakes but that minor ones can be expected in southern and central parts of the country.
The Albanian majority in Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, but Belgrade refuses to recognize it. The northern part of Kosovo is populated largely Serbs and recognizes Belgrade's authority.
