Ammann makes Swiss history with ski-jump World Cup crown
Mar 12, 2010, 17:56 GMT
Lillehammer, Norway - Simon Ammann became the first Swiss to claim the ski-jumping World Cup title on Friday when he won the penultimate competition of the season.
Ammann, 28, soared 135.5 metres and 133.5 metres for a winning total of 274.5 points on the hill of the 1994 Olympics.
The 2009 champ Gregor Schlierenzauer came second with 132m and 132.5m for 271.5 points. Poland's Adam Malysz was third with 265.9 points from 135.5m and 127.5m.
Ammann got down on his knees and bowed to the hill after clinching the World Cup, a few weeks after becoming a double Olympic champion for the second time in Vancouver.
'Ending the season in this way is priceless ... to now have the trophy,' said Ammann. 'Swiss ski jumping has never had this before. That makes me especially proud.'
Ammann now has eight season wins for a career tally of 16 and tops the World Cup with 1,549 points from 22 events into Sunday's finale in Oslo. Schlierenzauer has 1,346 and can no longer catch Ammann.
