Madrid - Chilean novelist Hernan Rivera Letelier, 59, has won the Alfaguara Prize, one of the top literature awards in the Spanish-speaking world, the jury announced Monday.
Rivera Letelier won the award for his novel El Arte de la Resurreccion (The Art of Resurrection).
Taking place in a Chilean desert in the early 20th century, the novel tells the story of a man who is known as the Christ of Elqui, mingling historical and sociological elements with magical realism.
The Alfaguara Prize is worth 175,000 dollars (130,000 euros). It is granted annually by Spain's Alfaguara publishing house.
Rivera Letelier was chosen from among more than 500 candidates from Spain and Latin America.
