Tigers escape from Spanish zoo; police kill three (Roundup)
Mar 23, 2010, 15:21 GMT
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain - Seven tigers escaped from a zoo on Gran Canaria Island Tuesday, Spanish officials said.
Police shot dead three of the tigers and captured the rest, the officials said. About 100 police officers participated in the operation near Aguimes in the east of the Canary Island.
Sources at the Cocodrilos Park zoo, however, said only three tigers had escaped and were killed by police.
The trio left a cage holding a total of seven tigers while it was being cleaned, park sources said, blaming the incident on the negligence of the cleaning employee.
The tigers were located near the park, the sources said. The animals were heading back towards the zoo, but police decided to shoot them because they feared they could disperse and cause damage.
No visitors were in the zoo at the time.
Park sources had initially declined to give details about the incident, describing it as an 'internal' matter.
