Klaus: EU not more effective after Lisbon Treaty
Apr 15, 2010, 16:39 GMT
Prague - Czech President Vaclav Klaus, a fierce critic of the European Union and its reforming Lisbon Treaty, said Thursday that the pact has failed to boost the 27-member bloc's effectiveness.
Klaus, who was the last EU leader to sign the reform deal, said that the EU faces 'great problems' with implementing the new rules.
'The EU certainly did not become more effective thanks to the Lisbon Treaty,' he told reporters after meeting his Portuguese counterpart, Anibal Cavaco Silva, who is visiting Prague.
The pact, valid since December 1, overhauled the bloc's institutions in a bid to streamline its decision-making.
Klaus has opposed the treaty, viewing it as a step towards a European superstate. 'My opinion ex ante and ex post has not changed,' he said.
