Trial begins in Spain for 2006 bombing at Madrid airport
May 3, 2010, 14:58 GMT
Madrid - A trial began Monday in Spain for three suspected members of the militant Basque separatist group ETA, on charges of killing two people in a car bombing at a Madrid airport car park in December 2006.
The attack, which killed two Ecuadorian immigrants and injured 41 other people, led to the collapse of an incipient peace process between the Spanish government and ETA.
Mattin Sarasola, Mikel San Sebastian and Igor Portu refused to answer questions by a judge, saying they did not recognize his authority. They also claimed to have been tortured by police.
Prosecutors are requesting prison sentences of 900 years for each of the accused.
ETA has killed more than 820 people in its campaign for an independent Basque country since 1968. The group is listed as a terrorist organization by the European Union and the United States.
