Dozens injured as police arrest nationalist leader in Kosovo
Jun 12, 2010, 19:40 GMT
Pristina - At least 12 police officers were injured in clashes with supporters of the extreme Kosovo Albanian national party in Pristina on Saturday during the arrest its leader and five of its members.
Vetevendosja, or Self-determination movement leader Albin Kurti had earlier announced that his movement would run in the 2011 parliamentary elections.
His supporters accused police of using force. Glauk Konjufca of Vetevendosja told reporters that police had used teargas.
Police spokesperson Baki Kelani meanwhile told the German Press Agency dpa that 'the necessary force' had been used to bring the situation under control.
Police said that five police cars and a vehicle belonging to the European Union's law enforcement mission in Kosovo, EULEX, were damaged.
The EULEX charged Kurti for preventing officials from doing their duty during a Vetevendosja protest in 2007, when two activists were killed and several seriously injured.
Kurti does not recognize the authority of the EU mission and is demanding the withdrawal of the international community from Kosovo.
