German defence minister wants "continuity" in Afghan strategy
Jun 23, 2010, 14:49 GMT
Djibouti - German Defence Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, in careful remarks on the controversy over NATO's top general in Afghanistan, Stanley McChrystal, said Wednesday he saw no need for a change in strategy in the Afghan war effort.
While visiting Djibouti, the Berlin minister said that independent of the fate of McChrystal, commander of the ISAF forces in Afghanistan, 'I do not see any good reasons for a radically changed strategy.'
Guttenberg put in a good word for McChrystal, who is under fire for controversial remarks in a Rolling Stone magazine interview, saying he had always worked well together with the US general.
'For the overall alliance which is now in the process of carrying out a new strategy, a sign of continuity would fundamentally be desirable,' Guttenberg said.
His remarks followed the same line of argument earlier Wednesday by Afghan President Hamid Karzai who argued against a sacking of McChrystal at this point in the war.
