Supermodel Campbell to testify in Taylor trial, prosecutor pleased

The Hague - Supermodel Naomi Campbell could testify in the war crimes trial of Charles Taylor as soon as this month, officials at the Special Court for Sierra Leone said Thursday.
Judges have subpoenaed the celebrity to come to The Hague and confirm reports that she received a 'blood diamond' from the former Liberian leader.
Prosecutor Brenda Hollis learnt about the gift from actress Mia Farrow, who was also present at a reception at Nelson Mandela's South African home in 1997 attended by Campbell and Taylor.
Campbell has not denied receiving the diamond, but told the Oprah Winfrey Show on May 3 that she did not wish to be involved in the case for fear that it might endanger her family.
Judges have said Campbell and Farrow should provide their testimony before the defence closes its case. This could take place by late July, though court officials warned that proceedings might extend until late August or early September.
Prosecutors say evidence of the gift is central to their case, since it supports allegations that Taylor used rough diamonds to finance the purchase of arms for Sierra Leone.
Campbell's testimony also 'contradicts the Accused's testimony that he has never been in possession of rough diamonds,' prosecutors said, according to court documents published Thursday.
Hollis said she was 'pleased by the judge's decision' and dismissed suggestions that Campbell's presence was merely a publicity stunt.
'I do not respond to such suggestions. The chamber has made its decision and we will act accordingly,' Hollis told the German Press Agency dpa.
Taylor faces 11 charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity for allegedly backing rebels responsible for widespread atrocities during a civil war in Liberia's neighbouring country.
Judges agreed to issue the subpoena after prosecutors repeatedly failed to persuade Campbell to provide the evidence to the court.
Judges in The Hague have asked 'the authorities of the state in which Ms Campbell is residing to assist in the enforcement of this Order.'
The British model could face charges of contempt of court if she refuses to cooperate with the court.
