Brussels set as first visit by Polish president-elect
Jul 9, 2010, 10:19 GMT
Warsaw - Polish President-elect Bronislaw Komorowki said late Thursday he wants to visit Brussels in his first diplomatic trip as president, followed by stops in Berlin and Paris.
In announcing his planned visit, Komorowski called Brussels the 'capital of an integrating Europe.'
Komorowski, speaking to Polsat News, said the trip would be a chance to visit the European Parliament, headed by Pole Jerzy Buzek. This would be a symbol of Poland's will to 'actively participate in deepening European integration,' he said.
The trip to Brussels should later include stops at Paris and Berlin to emphasize the role in the EU of the Weimar Triangle, a diplomatic partnership that includes Poland, France and Germany, the new president said.
Komorowski said the group strengthens Poland's chances of playing a significant role in the EU.
He said he will follow up on US President Barack Obama's invitation to visit Washington but Poland must first take care of the region where it has direct interests.
Komorowski won the recent Polish presidential runoff elections held on July 20 for a successor to Lech Kaczynski, who died in April in a plane crash in Russia.
Komorowski was the candidate of the centre-right Civic Platform party, but gave up his membership when he won the elections in keeping with the custom of keeping the presidency nonpartisan.
