Swedish authorities intervene against woman with 191 cats
Jul 20, 2010, 16:08 GMT
Stockholm - A woman who kept 191 cats in her home south of Stockholm has been forced to give them up, a report said Tuesday.
In all 173 cats were in such poor health that they had to be put down while the remainder were taken to an animal sanctuary, the Stockholm daily Aftonbladet reported.
The Stockholm county administrative board had warned the woman, who was in her 60s, that she could keep no more than nine cats, but she ignored the warning prompting police to take action.
The house and a smaller adjacent building was full of cats - sitting or lying on tables, chairs, window sills and other areas. The cats lived in squalor and the inspector and police also found the remains of several dead cats.
'There was a strong sticky smell of ammonia that impacted the air passages,' animal welfare inspector Marie Lundin said in her report.
