Kosovo appeals for recognition to Islamic nations
Aug 3, 2010, 12:44 GMT
Pristina - Kosovo has appealed to Islamic nations to formally recognize its independence, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
Kosovo Foreign Minister Skender Hyseni made the appeal in a meeting with representatives from member states of the Arab League and the Organisation of the Islamic Conference in the United Nations, according to the statement.
The former province of Serbia, which has a majority Albanian and Muslim population, declared independence in 2008, but Serbia along with its superpower ally Russia have vowed never to recognise its sovereignty.
So far 69 of the 193 United Nations member states recognize Kosovo, among them however the United States and leading European Union nations - Germany, Great Britain and France.
