Morientes ends career for job as commentator
Aug 31, 2010, 12:31 GMT
Madrid - Former Spain World Cup forward Fernando Morientes announced Tuesday his retirement from football at the age of 34, in order to work as a radio and television commentator.
'After 17 years among football's elite it is a difficult decision to make, but I have been pondering over this for three months,' he said.
He added that he had turned down offers from Mexico, Qatar, Dubai and Portugal.
Morientes, a tall and powerful centre-forward, started his career at Albacete, then moved on to Zaragoza, Real Madrid, Monaco, Liverpool and Valencia. He helped Real to win the Champions League in 1998, 2000 and 2002, and Valencia to win the King's Cup in 2008.
He finished his career last season by helping Marseille win the French league title.
Morientes played for Spain between 1998 and 2007, scoring 27 goals in 47 matches, including at the 1998 and 2002 World Cups. dpa ds bwh
