Greenpeace activists scale oil rig off Greenland
Aug 31, 2010, 15:55 GMT
Copenhagen/Stockholm - Operations at an exploration rig off western Greenland were halted Tuesday after four activists from pressure group Greenpeace scaled the installation.
Greenpeace said the move was to protest against ongoing test drilling in environmentally sensitive Arctic waters.
Swedish activist Victor Rask, one of the four on the rig, issued a statement via Greenpeace saying the aim was to delay the test drilling until winter soon sets in, and in the meantime 'work for a global ban against dangerous deep sea drilling.'
A Greenpeace spokesman said the group had sufficient supplies to remain several days on the rig.
Several energy groups hope to be able to tap in to gas and oil finds believed to be off Greenland.
