New group of Cuban dissidents begins arriving in Spain
Sep 2, 2010, 15:12 GMT
Madrid - Cuban dissident Prospero Gainza Aguero arrived Thursday in Spain, the first in a new group of six dissidents that Havana is releasing, media reported.
Gainza, 53, belongs to an illegal civil resistance movement and was serving a 25-year prison sentence.
Following weeks of negotiations, the Roman Catholic Church and the Cuban government made a deal in early July for the release of 52 dissidents. They were part of an initial group of 75 jailed in the so-called Black Spring of 2003.
Twenty-six of the dissidents had already arrived in Spain. On August 24, Havana announced the release of six others who had also agreed to fly to Madrid.
