Sep 3, 2010, 10:39 GMT
Berlin - A rash of new televisions which display images in 3D were the show-stoppers Friday as the annual IFA consumer-electronics show opened its doors in Berlin.
Top companies in the industry are using the fair to unveil new products ranging from energy-saving washing machines to new applications for mobile phones.
The fair has expanded since a year ago, with 1,423 exhibitors and 134,400 square metres of booth space, an increase of 11 per cent.
This year there are 66 per cent more companies from Taiwan alone, while the ranks of Hong Kong exhibitors lifted by 52 per cent.
The event, which got off to a good start in bright autumn sunshine Friday and runs till next Wednesday, is forecast to attract 230,000 visitors. Chancellor Angela Merkel opened the show in person Thursday evening.
The 3D televisions, which require viewers to each wear a pair of special eyeglasses, have attracted most attention in the run-up to the show.
Deutsche Telekom, the German company, said as the fair opened that it too would be offering 3D titles, including 'adult' movies, from its movie downloads site with immediate effect. It said pricing would match its high-definition movies with no extra charge for 3D.
