Spanish labour minister to step down; cabinet reshuffle expected
Sep 3, 2010, 11:46 GMT
Madrid - The upcoming resignation of Spanish Labour Minister Celestino Corbacho will prompt Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero to reshuffle his cabinet within a month, sources in his Socialist Party said Friday.
Corbacho is expected to step down after a September 29 general strike.
The minister, whose popularity has been eroded by Spain's 20 per cent unemployment, will become a candidate in regional elections in north-eastern Catalonia in November, media reported.
Corbacho is hoping to contribute to the re-election of Catalan regional Prime Minister Jose Montilla, a Socialist.
Other ministers who could be replaced include Health Minister Trinidad Jimenez, who is tipped to become the top Socialist candidate in the Madrid regional elections in May 2011.
The reshuffle would be the third in Spain over two years.
