Report: Telephone tapping in Turkey shows 50 per cent increase
Sep 8, 2010, 9:48 GMT
Istanbul - The number of authorised telephone taps in Turkey has shot up by more than 50 per cent, the daily Miliyet reported Wednesday.
For the year 2009 there were 142,135 cases, it said citing the prosecutor's office in Ankara.
That compares with 90,163 in 2008 and 63,576 in 2007. Several major political scandals have blown up in Turkey in recent years stemming from leaked telephone conversations - notably the so-called Ergenekon affair, in which senior figures from the secular military allegedly plotted to overthrow the mildly Islamic government.
The prosector's report also warns that most of the telephone networks connected to the president's office are not adequately protected.
The report only refers to officially authorised phone taps. Experts believe there are many unreported cases.
