Kosovo Albanian killed in Serb enclave
Sep 8, 2010, 10:11 GMT
Pristina - A Kosovo Albanian has been attacked and fatally shot in Kosovska Mitrovica, a town in the largest Serb enclave, police said Wednesday in Pristina.
The 31-year-old man was shot Tuesday night in the northern section of Mitrovica, which is almost exclusively populated by Serbs.
Tensions have mounted since Kosovo unilaterally declared independence in 2008, exacerbated by recent moves by Serbia to pass a motion on the issue at the United Nations.
Police spokesman Besim Hoti told the German Press Agency dpa that the killing was being investigated, that several people were questioned, but none arrested.
Sources close to the investigation speculated that the killing was not ethnically motivated, but had a criminal background.
Northern Mitrovica is the informal capital of Kosovan Serbs and the hub of their largest enclave. Ethnic Albanians make up an overwhelming majority in the rest of Kosovo.
