Serbia urged to delay reservoir work because of war crime victims
Sep 10, 2010, 16:02 GMT
Belgrade/Sarajevo - The European Parliament's human rights rapporteur has called on Serbia to delay flooding an artificial lake to allow investigators more time to search for war crime victims.
'Flooding the lake would disrupt any further investigation, as well as the recovery of the remains of victims,' Jelko Kacin said in a letter to Serbian war crimes prosecutor Vladimir Vukcevic, details of which were published in local media on Friday.
The remains of up to 250 people, presumably Bosnian Muslim victims of Serb forces in the 1992-95 Balkans war, have so far been recovered from the mud at the bottom of the Perucac reservoir.
Located on the border between Serbia and Bosnia, the reservoir was partly drained in June during the reconstruction of the Bajina Basta hydroelectric power plant, but is due to be flooded in two days.
