Former East German peace activist, Baerbel Bohley, dies at 65
Sep 11, 2010, 15:49 GMT
Berlin - The former East German opposition activist and artist Baerbel Bohley died of cancer Saturday aged 65, the human rights society which she helped run announced.
Bohley was one of the most prominent activists in the final days of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which collapsed after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
She was one of the founders of the New Forum in that year, and had earlier been censured by the East German authorities for her views critical of the East German Communist regime.
The Robert Havemann Society, which was a successor organisation to the New Forum, announced her death. She had withdrawn from public life in recent years.
