Police separate sides after ethnic clashes in Kosovo
Sep 12, 2010, 8:32 GMT
Pristina - Police in northern Kosovo were called out Saturday night to separate ethnic Albanians and Serbians before fighting could get out of control, reported authorities.
Hundreds of ethnic Albanians entered the Serb-dominated northern part of Kosovo shortly before midnight Saturday to celebrate Turkey's win over Serbia in the Basketball World Championships, said police spokesman Besim Hoti.
In the town of Mitrovica, Serbian residents responded by pelting the Albanians with stones. Police eventually blocked a bridge over the Ibar river to separate the two groups.
The situation remains calm. There were only unofficial reports of four people injured in the violence. Some witnesses reported gunshots, but police could not confirm that.
Serbian-dominated Mitrovica is often a flashpoint in ethnic tensions in Kosovo, which, overall, is 90 per cent populated by Albanians.
