Serbian government wants to scrap military conscription
Sep 30, 2010, 17:50 GMT
Belgrade - The Serbian government said Thursday that it wants to stop conscripting troops after January 1.
Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic's cabinet said it has sent the relevant military service bill to parliament for debate.
It calls for the Serbian army to have only professional soldiers after the final class of conscripts serves its mandatory six-month tour of duty in 2011.
The new law would also allow volunteers to serve a tour of duty.
It is estimated that the Serbian army has some 38,000 soldiers and employees.
