Kremlin appoints new head of human rights commission
Oct 13, 2010, 0:21 GMT
Moscow - The Kremlin has appointed a new head of its human rights committee, two and a half months after the last head resigned in protest.
Lawyer and journalist Michail Fedotov, 61, secretary of the Russian Journalist's Association will now head the advisory board on the development of Russian civil society, reported the Kremlin Tuesday.
Fedotov named the mental de-Stalinization of Russian society and police and judicial reforms initiated by Medvedev as his top priorities.
Civil rights activists praised the appointment.
Pamfilova resigned at the end of July, citing the country's worsening human rights situation. Her resignation came just after moves to strengthen the powers of Russia's secret service. It was seen as a blow to Medvedev in his attempts to prove to the West that Russia takes human rights seriously.
