Air controllers' protest delays flights to Canary Islands
Oct 21, 2010, 14:33 GMT
Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain - A partial work stoppage by air controllers caused delays Thursday in flights to Spain's Canary Islands, the airport management company AENA said.
The worst affected airports in the morning included southern Tenerife, where half of the incoming flights were almost 1 hour late on average. On Gran Canaria, about 20 per cent of the flights were delayed.
Outgoing flights also suffered delays.
About a third of air controllers in the morning shift refused to perform their duties. They were protesting a new air navigation radio system that was introduced on Thursday.
About 40 of the 120 Canaries air controllers did not have the adequate training to use the system, the air controllers' union USCA said.
