Serb sentenced to seven years in prison for Kosovo war crime
Nov 10, 2010, 14:45 GMT
Pristina/Belgrade - A court in Kosovo has sentenced a former Serb police officer to seven years in prison for a 1999 war crime, the European Union's law enforcement mission (EULEX) said Wednesday.
The mission said a panel of one Kosovar and two EULEX judges on Tuesday found Vukmir Cvetkovic guilty of expelling one family from Klina and burning the houses of two families in late March 1999.
Cvetkovic was a member of the Serbian police at the time of the crime. He was arrested in Norway and extradited to Kosovo in July.
NATO expelled Serbian security forces from Kosovo in 1999 to end their crackdown on the majority Albanian population.
The former province declared independence in 2008 and was quickly recognized by leading Western nations. The EU deployed EULEX to Kosovo two years ago to help it establish the rule of law.
