At least seven indicted in Kosovo illegal organ trade
Nov 12, 2010, 16:20 GMT
Pristina - At least seven people have been indicted in Kosovo in connection with the illegal trade of human organs, the European Union's law enforcing mission (EULEX) said Friday.
Five of the suspects were charged last month with trafficking in human organs, organized crime and abusing official authority. The other two were charged with unlawful medical activities, EULEX said.
Among the defendants were doctors and one former senior official at the Kosovo Health Ministry, it said. An international arrest warrant had been issued for two more people.
The illegal organ transplants were arranged by the international ring between poor donors and rich recipients, of different nationalities, at the Medicus clinic in Pristina.
The intermediaries paid the donors, mostly from Eastern Europe, around one-quarter of what they charged the recipients.
