Svendsen continues dominant start as Bjoerndalen crashes
Dec 4, 2010, 14:33 GMT
Ostersund, Sweden - Emil Hegle Svendsen claimed his second victory in as many biathlon World Cup season races on Saturday as fellow-Norwegian star Ole-Einar Bjoerndalen crashed late in the 10- kilometres sprint.
The World Cup title holder Svendsen had to ski one penalty loop on his way to victory in 25 minutes, 1.9 seconds to follow up on his success in Thursday's season-opening 20km at the same Swedish venue.
Compatriot Ole Einar Bjoerndalen had to settle for second place after an uncharacteristic fall shortly before the finish saw the 36- year-old come home 3.9 seconds behind Svendsen despite perfect shooting in the range.
Martin Fourcade of France was also perfect in the range on his way to a third-place finish 14.3 seconds adrift of Svendsen to replicate the podium placings from the 20km race.
'I feel very strong, the snow is very slow which suits me,' said the 25-year-old winner before expressing sympathy for Bjoerndalen's slip.
'I'm sorry for him but it was good for me. He was really angry and upset so I didn't speak to him.'
Bjoerndalen hit his ski pole against an advertising hoarding after crossing the finish line in disgust about the fall which denied him a 92nd World Cup win in the sport.
The biathlon World Cup season continues Sunday in Ostersund with men's 12.5km and women's 10km pursuit races.
