Alicia Gimenez Bartlett wins Spain's oldest literature prize

Jan 7, 2011, 10:46 GMT

Barcelona - Spanish novelist Alicia Gimenez Bartlett, 59, has been awarded the Nadal Prize, Spain's oldest literature award, the jury announced in the night to Friday.

Barcelona-based Gimenez Bartlett, who is known for her crime stories, won the award for her novel Donde Nadie Te Encuentre (Where Nobody Finds You).

The novel tells the story of Teresa Pla Meseguer (1917-2004), a female bandit who joined the resistance movement against Francisco Franco's 1939-75 dictatorship.

Suspected of 29 murders, Pla was detained in 1960 and jailed for 17 years.

The story of Pla, who adopted the identity of a man, reflects the 'terrible Spain of the 1950s,' Gimenez Bartlett said.

The Nadal Prize, which is worth 18,000 euros (23,400 dollars), has been awarded annually since 1944 by the Barcelona-based Destino publishing house.
