It's all in the name for EU's new Mr Legal
Jan 24, 2011, 15:28 GMT
Brussels - European Union governments chose an aptly-named candidate on Monday, when they appointed a new chief legal expert for the bloc.
Their choice fell on Hubert Legal, a Frenchman due to become legal adviser to EU summits and Director-General of the legal service of the Council, the bloc's secretariat, as of February 1.
The decision was taken during a regular meeting of EU agriculture ministers in Brussels, a statement said.
The legal service often plays a key role in EU decision-making. Last year, for example, it was instrumental in working out a way for the bloc to embark on its first-ever internal rescue operation for Greece, without breaking a no-bailout clause in EU treaties.
Mr Legal will succeed another Frenchman, Jean-Claude Piris, who has been the EU's chief lawyer since 1988.
