Top Spanish chef Santi Santamaria dies in Singapore

Barcelona - Spanish top chef Santi Santamaria died of an apparent heart attack at the age of 53 in in Singapore on Wednesday, sources of his three-star restaurant Can Fabes said.
Santamaria had been visiting a restaurant he owned at the time.
He was one of the pioneers of Catalan haute cuisine which is now regarded as being among the most sophisticated in Europe.
In 1994, he became the first chef from the north-eastern Spanish region to be granted three stars in the Michelin gastronomy guide.
Santamaria sparked controversy by his criticism of some of his colleagues, whom he accused of turning food into a too complicated, high-tech undertaking.
Santamaria was 'an example for an entire generation of chefs,' his colleague Carme Ruscalleda said.
