Feb 21, 2011, 13:32 GMT
Warsaw - Some 179 people have died in Poland since December due to exposure, police said Monday, appealing to citizens to be mindful of the homeless and elderly as cold weather was expected to continue this week.
The figure includes 134 deaths in December, 22 deaths in January and another 23 deaths so far this month, police said.
Authorities have appealed to the public to notify police if they see homeless or drunk people sleeping on the street so they can be taken to warm shelters.
Since the start of winter police have increased their patrols of abandoned homes, parks and other places where homeless might be found.
For the 2009-2010 winter season, there were 289 deaths.
